CALIFORNIA UMAP
The Utility Military Assistance Program: California Utility Military Assistance Program (UMAP-CA) is openly recruiting current California National Guard members, Reservists and Honorably Discharged military veterans for our 2024 utilities training program. This program is also open to current active duty personnel pursuing the Department of Defense’s SkillBridge program.
The program is designed to provide the requisite skills and knowledge an individual will need for a successful career within the utility sector. UMAP-CA Training Program will provide a 10-day skilled worker training for Leak Survey Technicians.
Upon completion of the training, workers will conduct scheduled and unscheduled leak survey of gas Distribution and Transmission system
pipelines to meet code compliance by various means; including but not limited to aerial, mobile or on foot, make independent judgements in
identifying abnormal operating conditions (AOC’s) and classify gas leaks based on conditions found, and perform other related duties as

duties & responsibilities
- Performs duties in accordance with Company Gas Standards, guidelines, and established safety procedures.
- Conducts Leak Survey activities including routine survey, special surveys,bar-per-policy, leak investigations.
- Responsible for identifying and classifying leaks and recognizingconditions which may pose potential hazards to the public.
- Identifies/repairs/reports Abnormal Operating Conditions found in the field.
- Documents and prepares assigned work orders noting findings/observations for company records.
- Extracts information from and inputs data into computers/handheld systems. Uses electronic devices to update records and order material.
- Effectively completes related paperwork, forms, and documentation.
- Visually inspects above ground piping and MSA’s in conjunction with leak survey.
- Responsible for the safe operation and driver inspection of Company vehicles.
- Maintains clean tools and vehicle.
- Test leak survey tools per Gas Company standards.
- Performs various other equivalent and lower-grade functions that the employee has been trained tor for which training will be provided.
- May discuss work being performed with customers when conducting leak survey activities.
- May communicate over two-way radio or telephone.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Work will require entry to customers premises and will include outdoor activity.
- Exposed to extremes of climate, temperature, and rough terrain.
- May be required to handle hazardous materials and waste.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must pass formal training.
- Must have a valid California driver’s license.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test if a new hire or moving from a non-safety sensitive job.
- All incumbents are subject to participation in Company’s random drug testing program.
- Must have basic computer and communication skills.
- Must pass pre-qualification examinations: Mechanical Test Battery.
- Must pass a structured interview.
- Must successfully pass the Physical Abilities Test.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Mechanical and/or construction skills and experience are recommended. Familiarity with computer-based programs (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional lifting of up to approximately 50 pounds, as required.
- Operational needs and or emergency situations may require extended hours.
- This job requires a moderate level of physical strength and endurance deeded to effectively and safely perform the job duties as listed above (e.g., upper body/lower body/torso/back strength).
